Draft picking is complex and requires a whole range of heroes being played well.
Background
We regularly make a few basic mistakes in HL draft picking by not being prepared for it:
Now imagine 5 of us enter HL and have Haunted Mines map and have a good comp in mind. But the enemy picks first and imagine now any of our 5 heroes is chosen.
Now what ?
There are many possible answers but the first question you would always have answer is:
"Pick an alternative hero that fulfills the same role as your primary pick and you play about equally well"
There problems already arise, eg for me if rehgar is picked or banned, i have no support I play "about equally well", Brightwing I played most but I don't feel comfortable yet with her, however I do feel "about equally comfortable" with playing certain other heroes, but in a different role, eg vikings or tyrael or even johanna / jaina I'd prob feel more comfortable.
Now this "feeling comfortable" is very important. The hero table for me "kinda" reflects our comfortable heroes that but it ain't science and you need player feedback.
So already the question of alternative hero can fail for several players. True, it is something they can work on (playing on a role instead of just a hero), but meanwhile you typically get the second question trying to be answered:
"Lets switch roles between players."
But this is more complex then it seems !
Since on the fly in 30s deciding who switches with who is not ideal and unprepared decisions can really break your game before it even started.
Still we want our goal of comfortable hero selection that synergises to be kept intact.
So how do we do that ?
By having us think more about it ourselves upfront how we fit in certain compositions within our playerbase so we are more prepared and we can built up experience based on those ideas and plans.
So here is a game that can help us achieve that.
Game 1 - Shana/Galaxy/MagicPants/Dalamar/Willstringer
I chose this game because I know for certain those 5 players liked that composition.
This was a composition that really worked and was based on this match:
Question @all
Imagine in HL draft pick its Haunted Mines and our 5 players want to go for same comp.
Enemy has first pick and chooses any of our 5 heroes first.
Which alternative (team fight) compositions could work out for our 5 people ?
1. Obviously feedback from those players themselves is important
2. The hero table thread also indicates certain limitations, but of course it only shows the top 5, they likely play other heroes but just not that often yet
For example, Will has no alternative Ranged DPS except Nova but thats not exactly the same role. And Dalamar has no alternative Ranged DPS.
There are options. But which of them would work you think ?
Everybody's feedback is interesting. If this game thingie works I can create another game thread later with different people etc etc

We regularly make a few basic mistakes in HL draft picking by not being prepared for it:
- our heroes getting counter picked and we do not have a good plan B
- we don’t have compositions planned up front
- so we create completely new compositions on the fly which are likely to fail
Now imagine 5 of us enter HL and have Haunted Mines map and have a good comp in mind. But the enemy picks first and imagine now any of our 5 heroes is chosen.
